plot
The world has been thrown into turmoil. Two alien invasions in as many years resulted in thousands of casualties, with both only narrowly beaten back, and dangerous advanced technology falling into unscrupulous hands. Magneto's defeat by the Sentinels drove mutant supremacists to increasingly desperate and savage lengths. Rumors grew of uncanny monsters stalking the shadows and taking the unwary. But, through it all, humanity placed its faith in S.H.I.E.L.D.

And then S.H.I.E.L.D. fell.

Namor McKenzie

Independents

While he was still maintaining his decades-long reticence on the existence of his people and Atlantis, Namor generally didn't give much thought to hiding his own extra-human nature beyond letting his hair grow to cover his ears and trying to avoid doing overtly superhuman things in public. The fact he dressed like a guy whose only vigorous exercise was, maybe, the occasional game of racquetball, was down to simple mimicry rather than any idea of hiding that he was anything but. Doing so would never have occurred to him. He was Namor, and Namor didn't yield.

Studying the image of the Ziggurat, the Atlantean nodded as if he'd actually recognized even half of the people and things Ellie had mentioned. He'd heard of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, but the other two were complete mysteries to him. He had no idea what 8-bit Pong was or why anyone would want to make it more complicated, but at least he knew what beanbag chairs were. Still, he got the gist of what she was saying. They were misfits and oddballs, smart in some ways, utterly clueless in others. He knew the type.

"Striking building," Namor said sincerely, wishing he had a picture of Oracle and making a mental note of this latest permutation of surfacer customs. He'd known them to carry around photographs of wives, children, and sometimes pets, but offices was a new one. Then again, perhaps it was just Ellie, as she seemed to be unique unto herself. "How soon would it be possible for me to come by?"

"The architect convinced dad by telling him it would help focus energy, which hey, there's some argument for that in certain circles and it's not like it cost extra so that's the way we went. He doesn't ask his wife for much, and he makes her fabulously wealthy while letting her pretend she's a business genius, so she tends to indulge him when he does." She had no trouble what-so-ever throwing her mother's real motivations out there for people to see. Her father made her mother's life easy, her mother and she had no such covenant.

The question kinda left Ellie standing there staring at the guy. Didn't he have a secretary? Her father had three, because they managed everything even remotely business related for him whenever his wife wasn't around to head it off. Namor was supposed to contact his secretary, who would contact her father's secretaries, who would hand it off to her mother's secretary, who would get a final pronouncement from the source. What Namor was asking, whether he knew it or not, was for a way around that process. Which made Ellie smile. She whipped out her phone and hit two buttons before putting it to her ear.

".... hey daddy."
....
"I changed your ring tone."
....
"They're laughing because it's hilarious and culturally relevant."
....
"No, you wouldn't get the reference. Because you haven't seen the show."
....
"I'm glad you appreciate the joke, but listen. How soon could I bring somebody up to the Ziggurat to see the place?"
....
"No, it's a he."
....
"No, 'he' isn't my girlfriend. He's the owner of a company named Oracle, I met him at the Stark technology porn convention."
....
"Are you sure my code still works?"
....
"Okay, then. Love you!"

She hung up and turned to Namor. "When would you want to come by?"

Ellie appeared thrown for a moment by his question about timing, and Namor wondered if he'd managed to transgress one of those unwritten air-breather rules that came and went seemingly without warning. They were like chairs in a dark room – those who lived on the surface simply knew where they were, but infrequent visitors like the Atlantean monarch occasionally tripped over them unawares. Still, Ellie rallied almost immediately, grinning, so whatever it was couldn't have been important – or at least not important to her.

Sliding his hands into his pockets, Namor stood at his ease, waiting patiently and listening with half an ear while Ellie spoke with her father on the phone. It seemed from her end of the conversation that they had a relaxed, affectionate relationship. As a father himself, albeit one who'd had sharply mixed results in children, that was something it pleased him to see.

Then she hung up and turned to Namor. "When would you want to come by?"

Pulling out his own phone – they'd gotten bigger again, he'd noticed, reversing the trend from his last visit when they were being made as tiny as possible – he made a quick call. "My driver can pick us up in twenty to thirty minutes," he said.

"Us?" Ellie asked the question in an incredulous tone so pure that it could only come from a young person, unfiltered as it was through any sort of concern for how the other half of the conversation might react to it. Her expression said he'd lost his damned mind, as well. For though Ellie was fully capable of taking care of herself (she was no Wolverine but she hit just about as hard and the bullets just bounced off her), she had no intention of putting herself in a situation where she'd then have to walk through the countryside looking for a signal so she could call up a ride back to the city. Mostly because she didn't want to hear that lecture a half-dozen times as the story made its way through the authority figures in her life. "I'm not in the habit of riding out into the boonies with strange men and their strange drivers. You can meet me there, ya creeper." There was a playful undertone in the accusation of being a creeper, but at the same time she was going to drive herself, thank you very much.

"I can give you the address, or you can just google it, or whatever. I don't recommend trying to follow me... I favor alacrity."

Namor blinked, the reaction he'd received genuinely surprising and baffling him, though he wasn't upset by it. Surfacer women could be very unpredictable, which was a large part of their allure for him. To the women of his own people he was instantly recognizable, the color of his skin marking him out even to those who had never seen him before. They knew he was their Emperor and treated him accordingly. Certainly none would have ever called him a creeper. Some were demure, some coy, some brazen, but they were all reacting to the crown, not the man. The only one who had done that was Dorma –

The Atlantean wrenched his mind away from that grief, old but still sharp, and focused on what Ellie was saying. He was just in time to encounter yet more new terminology. "Google?" he murmured to himself. It was clearly a verb, given the structure of the sentence, but not one he was familiar with. Then he shook his head, literally brushing the question aside with a wave of his hand. "No matter, no doubt my driver shall be able to find it. Thank you."

Ellie's hand came up, wanting to rub her temple but going for some imaginary irritant in her eye instead. Old business men weren't supposed to know about the internet, that's why people like her ran fiefdoms called I.T. Departments. No matter how mind-bending it was that the guy looked lost when she told him to Google directions, it was the reality that gave her skills and knowledge monetary value. Still, he seemed like a nice guy and he was trying to participate in his company's endeavors by being at the expo... she just hoped his I.T. people were overpayed. Because she bet at least one of them had been permenantly assigned to handling this guy's cyber presence.

"No doubt, because that's what drivers do." She agreed. "So, I guess I'll see you there when the two of you catch up." She pulled her keys from her jacket and twirled them on a finger as she made her way promptly toward where her car was parked, pulling out her phone and returning to what she usually did while moving from one place to another.

Once she reached her purple Scion iM, she unlocked the door with the press of a button and hopped right in, started it, and pulled around a laptop secured on an articulated arm from the dash. She poked around a few of her friends lists until she found somebody she could depend on, pulled them into a video chat, and smiled at the girl on the other side of the country. "Hey, I'm going to show up my mother on a business dealing but I have to drive myself to location. I need you to look up everything you can find on a company called Oracle and its owner, Namor McKenzie. You read it out, I drive, and then we meet in Corpus Christie for Spring Break."

That got an enthusiastic affirmative and she put the car into gear as the other girl started narrating her search efforts, a solid cooperative behavior that would allow Ellie to add her two cents without retracing ground already covered...

A mere minute after the two, significantly, richer people had walked away, Piotr came working his way through the flow of foot traffic. Careful, as always, due to his larger than average size to give way to others in order not to be seen as a brute or bully. He held a carefully stacked pile of packages Ellie had purchased against his chest with one arm, and a pair of hotdogs in the other hand, as he scanned the names on booths and tents. When he found the one he'd been told to look for he paused to scan the faces there in... but found no sign of Ellie.

He looked around, wondering where the girl had gotten to with a shrug. He didn't want his hotdogs to get cold, so he found a bench near the location he'd been told and sat down next to her stack of goods to happily eat them and wait for her to come collect him...
