plot
The world has been thrown into turmoil. Two alien invasions in as many years resulted in thousands of casualties, with both only narrowly beaten back, and dangerous advanced technology falling into unscrupulous hands. Magneto's defeat by the Sentinels drove mutant supremacists to increasingly desperate and savage lengths. Rumors grew of uncanny monsters stalking the shadows and taking the unwary. But, through it all, humanity placed its faith in S.H.I.E.L.D.

And then S.H.I.E.L.D. fell.

Julio tended to be curious. It was something that Transigen had mostly ignored, as long as he'd done his child soldier thing. As long as he followed orders and stayed afraid of his guards, they didn't particularly care. Then he'd been on the run, then Laura and the Wolverine had found him (he still had a bit of a hard time seeing him as the lesser-dangerous Dad/Logan). Now he had the school's safety to fall back on and had decided to make himself a nuisance without actually getting caught for it.

And Ellie had afforded an interesting opportunity. He'd noticed the dependency on technology that most of the kids around had, and she seemed to be no different. That iPod of hers had quickly caught his attention, and he'd set out to steal it. Something that he'd actually managed to do sooner than he'd thought. Ellie, being a girl, was also much less likely to attack him.

Upon snagging the iPod from her bag, he'd quickly run off and found a nice spot in the library where he could hide in a corner between a bookcase and one of those overstuffed upholstered chairs. It wasn't often that someone found him there, except for Laura, and he was certain that she just smelled him out like a bloodhound or something. She'd snuck up on top of the bookcase and jumped down onto his shoulders once, which had scared the hell out of him.

Right now his goal was more on figuring out how the iPod worked. He found the power button purely on accident, startling when the screen suddenly lit up. Okay, that was neat. He knew how the headphones worked only from watching Ellie wear them, though he was using a pair someone had left in the kitchen earlier instead of the ones that had been in the bag with the iPod. Grabbing one thing had been risky enough when it hadn't already been abandoned. He plugged them in and pressed the menu button, figuring out the basics of the interface in a few minutes. And then things got fun.

At the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters, stealing was frowned upon. Stealing a piece of personally purchased, fully functioning mobile technology from Negasonic Teenage Warhead was a higher crime entirely. Ellie was worked up in a righteous fury, having returned to her bag to find it laying on its side where it had been standing upright before and opening it to take inventory out of her newly awakened sense of suspicion only to indeed find something missing. Her iPod. It was no great loss, they didn't break the bank anymore, and she was sure she had enough pieces on her workbench to put together a fully functioning replacement by this point but that wasn't the point. Nor did it matter that there was nothing on it that she ddn't already have three full copies of elsewhere. The point was that someone had seen her bag, felt brazen enough to go into it, and then decided to help themselves to her property.

It was unacceptable, she was going to flash fry whoever the thieving little punk was. And it was going to be soon, too. Because she had her phone in hand, tracking the apple product's location from her Android device. The closer she got the more accurate it got, until she was standing outside the library doors. Fit to be tied, Ellie pushed both doors open and stormed in giving her steps enough of a stamp with her enhanced strength to make each one felt through the floor of the entire room thanks to the wooden subfloor of the room's original construction. She looked around and didn't immediately spot the culprit, so she checked her phone again. The closer she got, the more accurate she got. All she had to do was swing the phone side to side a few times until she had a bearing, and then she was snatching a chair away from the side of one of the shelves.

To find some kid she'd never seen before sitting there. "If you're looking to start a life of crime, you suck at it. If this is the modern equivalent of pulling my hair and running away, you're barking up the wrong tree little boy." She held out her partially gloved hand, giving him a stern and mildly angered look of expectation. She expected to get her property back just as fast as he could manage to bumble it into her hands.

Julio had no idea if this music was the sort of thing that most people listened to, but he wasn't entirely sure he liked all of it. Some of it was downright indecipherable, but there were a couple songs that he liked. And he'd kept the volume turned up, probably a lot louder than he should, but that wasn't exactly a concern. He'd gotten the impression that headphones kept anyone from hearing what you were listening to.

Despite the fact that he more or less couldn't really hear the outside world, he could definitely feel someone stomping around the library. He froze on instinct, assuming the heavier tread to belong to some angry man. And whoever it was seemed to be coming steadily closer, a fact that didn't do anything for his concern. For a brief moment, he wondered if something might have happened, but realistically the school could never have been breached with so little warning.

But if he'd been able to scurry out of his hiding place, he would have. While he didn't, there was a little shudder in the floorboards from a brief release of his powers, a nervous twitch of sorts. It was a girl that had tracked him down, so he didn't really think she would be a big threat. And she wasn't an adult, really, which also placed her lower on his danger scale. Doubtlessly he'd get a rude awakening someday. Quite possibly today, but how this scene would play out remained to be seen.

Nine Inch Nails was playing, and if he took off the headphones, it would be doing so audibly. Rather than depriving himself of a continued musical experience, he just sort of stared at her for a second, trying to figure out who she was and if she was supposed to be here. And the likelihood of the iPod belonging to her.

Finally he took out one earbud, though he continued to stare at her for another long moment before actually speaking. While he wasn't entirely mute like Laura, he didn't like talking unless he had to. "Prove it's yours," was all he said. Because he'd rightfully stolen it and he wasn't about to hand it over to the first person that came calling in search of it. At the moment he didn't have any reason to be truly afraid of her either, at least by his standards.

He just stared at her, sitting there with her iPod stuck in his head. She'd have put a crater in the library right there if it had been anything more valuable than the iPod, like her $3000 Walkman for instance, but her eyes still narrowed dangerously at the blatant delay in caving to her demand. And then the little filching insect had the nerve, the temerity, to demand that she prove it was hers. She'd hunted him down, she'd known that it wasn't his to begin with, called it hers from the get go, and was entirely done with this game.

Ellie went from standing perfectly still with her hand outstretched to suddenly snatching him up by a fistful of his shirt and stripping the iPod out of his hand in one overpowering action driven by her enhanced physical abilities. She held up the iPod so he could see the screen, tapped the divet, then typed in the four digit pass code that unlocked the rest of the device's capabilities. One little image touched and a menu popped up where right across the top of the screen were the words "Ellie's iPod", a name for the device she'd chosen only because Negasonic Teenage Warhead wouldn't fit in the available field when prompted.

Julio had the audacity to keep staring at her when her eyes narrowed. He didn't exactly think she was about to toss him through the window or something. Although he was kind of glad that Laura wasn't around, because doubtlessly that would have gone badly for at least one of them. She got violent sometimes, and her mutation doubtlessly made her one of the more dangerous Transigen kids, not that any of them were exactly benign. Any power could be corrupted into being dangerous.

When she grabbed him, he flailed slightly, though not enough to make her drop him. He was greatly reevaluating her dangerousness if she was that willing to attack him. Even if he had stolen something of hers. That was no reason to get violent, now was it? Personal boundaries were rather foreign to him and he'd sort of developed a habit of getting into other's peoples things. Laura did the same, he knew. That was how she'd met that Irish guy, not that Rictor liked him any more than he did Logan or any other man.

The way Ellie unlocked the iPod was downright fascinating. Rictor had had no idea that he could do anything other than what the limited functions had allowed him to do so far. And she'd done it so easily... but how? He didn't know much about technology. "Eso es genial, ¿cómo se hace eso?" He was more than half ready to make a grab for it to see what she'd done to make it work like that.

"Yes, I am both beautiful and blessedly merciful. Thanks for noticing," Ellie responded to the babble that came out of the boy. She dropped him unceremoniously and pulled the earbud plug out of the bottom of the iPod, slipping the device into a pocket in her clothes that was just the right size for it. "Also, I don't speak whatever that was. Shoot me an email, though, I've got several great text translators. Til then, stealing is wrong and you better not forget it. There are a lot of people here who could hurt you, in anger or because they're just surly bastards, if you go taking their stuff. I don't care for what you did but... I don't want you to get hurt just because you didn't know."

She ruffled his hair and stepped back to look him over. She hadn't seen him before, that she was aware of. Another stray, no doubt. "You new? Who brought you in? Wait, do you speak anything other than... whatever that was?"

Rictor scowled a little at being dropped but just removed the earbuds and stuck them in his pocket in a tangled mess. He'd figure out how to untangle them later. And possibly find another iPod that he could show to Laura, because he was sure that she would find it as fascinating as he had. New things made them both curious, and he was pretty sure she was just better at not getting caught.

He didn't take much of her speech on morality to heart. Stealing was fine if he needed something. Or if he just wanted something, sometimes. While he'd been told that he shouldn't, several times, it was just a normal part of survival. Just because he didn't have to survive at the school didn't mean that he stopped acting like he did. Swatting at her arm when she ruffled his hair, he didn't bother trying to smooth it back down.

"-¿No hablas español? Floja," he decided with a little grin. Not knowing more than one language was clearly the mark of a slacker. "I speak English." That was probably the only part that she'd be concerned with. Americans. "I'm one of Logan's." Easier than explaining everything. And he and Laura were sort of a package deal, so it was probably close enough to the truth. If he ever had to have a parent, it would probably be Logan instead of someone else at the school.

"Who are you? And how'd you do that with the iPod?" He pronounced it incorrectly, similar to 'ee-pid'. "And what's an 'e-mail'?" The way he said it indicated that he was mimicking her rather than being familiar with the word. Learning how to survive in Mexico and the flyover states hadn't exactly included a lot of tech training. Apart from avoiding cameras and cars and anything else that indicated a lot of people being around.

Ellie, like almost anyone else in the world, recognized the basic statement of 'no speak Spanish' and the fact that it was spoken in a questioning tone. What she didn't recognize was the single word spoken after it, but she had the sneaking suspicion that she wasn't going to like the translation. So she promptly whipped out her phone and checked it. Took her a moment to read through all the possible usages but the only one that wasn't childish, abnormally irrelevant, or just plain weird was for it to mean 'lame'. "I can program in more languages than you're even aware exist, pup. I have translation programs for all the people-speak." She could have laughed when he proclaimed he was one of Logans.

That man was trying to field his own football... then she recalled he was Canadian and amended the thought to fielding his own Hockey team. "That would explain the general lack of civilized behavior. You must have snuck in under the cover of his new daughter's shadow, and what a deep dark cover that is." That girl had produced quite a splash in short order. Reports had been filed by half the senior staff regarding her behavior thus far so her file was becoming quite the read. Though Ellie imagined that thus far only the people adding to it, herself, and the Professor were ever likely to crack that particular packet open it would have made for a fascinating discussion point with some of the more academically minded students were they cleared for such things.

Ellie had the itch to make a private chat room about it anyway.

"Negasonic Teenage Warhead, but the adults call me Ellie. And I did that by knowing my own pass code, which I will have to change because you saw it. It's pronounced eye-pod, by the way." She added the last bit in a purely informational way, no sarcasm to be found in the statement. She was never sarcastic about teaching people technical or branding lingo, it would just turn them off technology and she hated when people insisted on remaining technology illiterate. "What's an email?" She asked, more surprised than incredulous. She leaned down to look at him more on his level, with her hands braced on her thighs and a bit of a look of concern on her face. "Honey... where did they find you, exactly?" Could it be that he'd come from the same hell hole that she'd skimmed over described in the beginning of the file about Logan's daughter? What was her name... Laura? Yes, that was it. There had been something in there about other kids but at the time of the reading nothing else had been said on that matter.

Rictor only shrugged a little. "Probably." He'd only been in two countries, Mexico and America, and heard maybe three languages. While he honestly had zero idea of what was out there in the world, he'd gotten the idea that his life experiences had only made up a hundredth of a hundredth of what was out there. That made him assume that there were, therefore, hundreds and hundreds of other languages that he didn't know about. Although he didn't exactly take her statement at face value - there was nobody to confirm she was telling the truth, after all.

He did give a fair-sized smile at the mention of Laura. "When your sister is the only one trying to kill people, they don't notice you much." Although there had been a couple adults that had tried to 'welcome him to the school'. Rictor had, naturally, fled from the males, and been fairly neutral toward the friendliness of the lady. Clearly there was not going to be an argument about his behaviour. No attempts at changing it, either. Rictor saw no reason to do so, and as Ellie herself had pointed out, Laura was far worse.

The long name caused him to make a bit of a face. Why so complicated? And more importantly, "What's a 'negasonic' and a 'warhead'?" Understanding one word out of three wasn't entirely bad for meeting a new, strange person. He had no compulsions about asking an annoying amount of questions if the person being asked was all right with answering them. Once he got over Transigen, he'd likely pester Charles to the grave.

When she leaned down, he leaned back, giving her a bit of a quizzical look. Had he said something wrong? "I ran after the lab," he answered with a little shrug. "Logan and Laura found me in... Colorado?" That was what the man had said, he was pretty sure. "Why?" Did his origins have a connection to the sort of answer he'd get? Maybe... people were strange.

He was already getting better at knowing when not to argue, progress already. He had a point about his sister, but it was the same point that Ellie had been making to begin with so she didn't see any reason to reward him with even a smile on that front. She didn't like hearing her own thoughts out of other peoples mouths, it sounded like parroting or the gaggle of yes men that her mother liked to drag around with her. It still made him a sneak thief, too.

"I'm Negasonic, and a warhead is the thing that goes boom on the front end of a missile. Usually associated with nuclear weapons. I'd show you why that's fitting but neither you nor the library would survive the experience." He'd almost found out first hand anyway, when he'd given her that recalcitrant look over her demanding he give her property back. That hardened her against him again, but not for long as her shock over his lack of technological... experience.

He was grown in a lab, just like the girl. Likely not of Logan's genetic stock, he didn't have any of that look about him. He could be any number of things, ethnicity-wise. That was a puzzle for a later time, however. Right now, he had almost literally been living under a rock. "You've never had an email, or an iPod, or anything else of that nature? Have you ever even heard of the internet?" She asked, in all concern.

>> "I'm Negasonic, and a warhead is the thing that goes boom on the front end of a missile."

"Your name is Negasonic?" Rictor asked sceptically. If there was any other context for the word, he'd never heard of it. But her reference to showing him just made him curious. "Is that your power?" There were all different kinds at the school, he knew that. Controlling metal, controlling the weather, getting into peoples' minds, having claws.

>> "You've never had an email, or an iPod, or anything else of that nature? Have you ever even heard of the internet?"

"I just asked you what an e-mail was," he pointed out. That should indicate that he'd never had one, right? And he'd had just about no idea how to work the iPod either. "Professor Xavier mentioned it," he answered her second question. That was about all he'd ever heard of it, unfortunately. He had a vague idea that it was a way for people to communicate, but that was about the extent of his knowledge.

"Is the internet important?" She'd indicated it was with her tone, but he wasn't sure if she was just being biased. Although the Professor had known about it, so...

"No, my name is Ellie. Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a code name. Everyone has one, even if not everybody uses one. If you don't have one, you will soon. Usually has something to do with your powers, so in your case 'Sticky-Fingers' is definitely in the running." She gave him a narrow look to show that was a stab at his filching ways, but that she wasn't actively angry anymore. "I generate nuclear explosions, more or less." She nuked, and there was radiation, but it wasn't anywhere near the amount that would be produced by an actual nuclear explosion. Semantics, really.

Ellie rolled her eyes. "It was an exclamation of surprise disguised as a question, asked in disbelief. Because it's really f*cking strange for somebody your age to not know what an email is." Ellie was only slightly less surprised that Xavier had anything at all to say about the internet, but the comments that came to mind would be lost on the hobbit in front of her. "So odd, that it's utterly unacceptable."

She took him by the hand and led him toward the door. "It's the second most important thing you'll ever see, little boy. But while the first, for you, won't have anything to do with me, guaranteed, I am about to give you the internet. Come on, today's your birthday." Goddess, she hoped he understood metaphors.

If it hadn't been for Ellie's look, there was honestly a chance that Rictor would have missed the meaning to her suggestion of his code name. Although the description of her powers was much more interesting. "That's cool." He'd managed to pick up a few slang phrases, though Laura had probably heard more than he had. Rictor kept to himself more than she did, despite her non-talking ways.

"Everything about my sister and me is really f*cking strange," he pointed out. There was nothing normal about being raised in a lab, being told you were a freakish monster, and only learning differently when your situation swung to the other end of the spectrum and got sort-of adopted into a family. And the family was pretty weird, too, he wasn't about to deny that, even if he liked both of them. He rolled his eyes a little at it being deemed 'unacceptable', as he had a very different idea of that word, but didn't comment.

"What's the first?" he asked, letting her lead him out of the library. He was curious enough not to throw a fuss over that, both by what she'd already said and what she evidently intended on showing him. Ellie got another puzzled glance at the reference to his birthday, because as of yet they had no idea when that was, but he could let her have her beliefs. If she wanted to think today was his birthday, then... okay.

"I know," she responded easily to his judgment of her abilities. Not as cool as if she had been able to generate those explosions remotely but at least her mutation had made her tough enough to survive what it took to both produce her most spectacular, titular power as well as the ordeals of getting herself where she needed to be to make it matter.

Ellie gave Julio a look that said he was preaching to the choir when it came to believing himself and his sister really strange. Though, to be honest, having the kind of perspective it required to identify yourself as strange was an unusual occurance at the best of times. Even amongst mutants. No, especially amongst mutants.

She snorted lightly as he proceeded to press on the subject that she'd already told him had nothing to do with her. "I do believe I already stated you wouldn't be finding out about that from me. Don't worry, you're cute so far as breeders are concerned. You'll find out sooner rather than later, all on your own." And Ellie would be, preferably, two counties away when he did. Best for everybody involved, really. She proceeded to lead him upstairs and to the faculty hall, where she had the door farthest from the important people and unlocked her door. Ellie then stepped in leaving the door open for him to follow into the controlled chaos of the land of Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

There was a bunkbed on the left, the top bunk obviously having been given over to storage and the lower bunk now obfuscated by hanging dark purple sheets. To the right was a side table with two drawers upon which Ellie dropped her keys and her bag was tucked around the far side of it. Beyond the side table was a table built into the wall that ran the length of the room down the right side, upon which was a plethora of tools, parts, and shells running from the mechanical to the electrical. There was likely a large window on the back wall, but it was entirely covered and no light appeared to be coming from behind the tapestry hung over it's location. To the left, past the foot of the bunkbed, was a six screen computer set up with oversized speakears, and a pair of towers under the desk. The whole computer set up glowed from time to time with purple accent lighting built into everything from monitors to speakers to towers to even the desk itself. To the right, next to where the work bench ended at the wall was a mini fridge and a very large flat-screen tv.

Ellie was already digging around in boxes under the work bench down at that end. "You said you were one of Logan's, yeah? You don't just mean he found you and that's the last you've spoken, right?"

Ellie's diversion regarding the topic he'd gotten curious about was evidently the final word. He decided to ask Logan about that later, or maybe one of the other adults... on second thought, Logan. So far he didn't trust any of the others in the slightest. Although Ororo had seemed nice. Maybe he could ask her.

He was highly tempted to poke at some of the stuff, but he had no real idea what it was, so he refrained. Although he did kick at the leg of one of the tables a little. Why not? There were one or two things he recognised, just because he knew what the inside of a basic toolbox looked like. He'd rifled through enough of those looking for money, food, or weapons while he was on the run.

>> "You said you were one of Logan's, yeah? You don't just mean he found you and that's the last you've spoken, right?"

"We don't talk much," he said with a shrug. "I don't think he likes me. What's that?" he added, pointing at the computer setup. His tone indicated that he had no idea what any of it was. And since the iPod was the most technologically advanced thing he'd ever been in arm's reach of, he was also pretty curious. Because why not?
