The world has been thrown into turmoil. Two alien invasions in as many years resulted in thousands of casualties, with both only narrowly beaten back, and dangerous advanced technology falling into unscrupulous hands. Magneto's defeat by the Sentinels drove mutant supremacists to increasingly desperate and savage lengths. Rumors grew of uncanny monsters stalking the shadows and taking the unwary. But, through it all, humanity placed its faith in S.H.I.E.L.D.

And then S.H.I.E.L.D. fell.

We are looking for Melinda May, Jemma Simmons, T'Challa, Karl Mordo, Hank McCoy, Lucas Bishop, Dr. Doom, X-Men, Inhumans,

Lady Tareva is the Sorceress Supreme of Atlantis. She's not quite as powerful with magic as Dr. Strange, but as a full-blooded merwoman, she has a number of physical advantages (and can use magic to counter some of her limitations, such as not being able to breathe out of the water). She also has formidable mental discipline, enough to allow her to resist the allure of the Serpent Crown (at least long enough for her to secure it).

As Atlantis' Sorceress Supreme she has a place on the Royal Council and near-total authority when it comes to magic and magic-users. Even Namor will defer to her (usually, anyway, he's really bad at deferring). On the flip side, with great power, etc. etc. She's responsible for protecting Atlantis from mystical threats, and helping out with mundane ones if they're more than Namor and the mundane defenses can handle. She takes that seriously, but the rest of her history and personality are up to you.

Namor was in an extremely bad temper. This was not an unheard-of occurrence – his rages had once been the stuff of legend, after all – but age and responsibility had mellowed him somewhat. He still regarded surface-dwellers in general with surly disgust, and made no bones about expressing that opinion whenever the mood struck him, but he had refrained from inflicting major carnage for decades. He had, he felt, been remarkably patient putting up with the venality and idiocy of air-breathers dumping all manner of garbage into his realm, but he had finally been pushed too far.

The latest provocation, while toxic in its own right, hadn't taken the comparatively simple and sadly-usual form of barrels of hazardous waste. That sort of thing he generally just returned to its owners, frequently with great force. In this case, though, whatever it was hadn't been sealed in a watertight container when the plane carrying it had ditched in the ocean, with the result that it had dissolved and the poison had been dispersed over a wide area downcurrent. A dozen of Namor's people were dead, suffocated when their gills became clogged by some black, stonelike substance, and an investigating Namor himself only survived thanks to his ability to fly up out of the water and breathe the air above.

Tareva, Atlantis' Sorceress Supreme, had been able to clear his gills, but near-death made him surly and the fact they still hurt kept the experience firmly in his mind. Adding further insult to the injury, there had been no fewer than three attempts launched by surface-dwellers to seize the plane in question. Not, he figured, out of any desire to mitigate the damage its cargo had done, but because said cargo was of value to them. He had driven off all three, making plain that further incursions would be met with his extreme displeasure. Apparently, though, either they hadn't passed the word along or other groups hadn't believed them, as a fourth submarine had showed up that morning.

The fourth submarine had been armed, not that that had done it any good. If anything just the reverse. The Atlantean monarch took exception to having torpedoes fired at his person, so after he'd smashed the missiles, he'd wrecked the firing tubes and the screws that propelled the submersible. He hadn't made large holes in the craft, so the crew was probably still alive inside, not that he especially cared as he lifted it out of the water and flew with it through the air.

Clearly, in order to prevent any further ignorant trespass, he was going to have to make his point emphatically and publically, and there was only one place he knew where that could be accomplished. The United Nations had its headquarters in New York, which had the further virtue from his perspective of being located on a seacoast. Even better, the building itself overlooked the estuary misnamed the East River. New York was said to have a superhuman guardian or two, but he was Namor. More, he was armed with Neptune's Trident and scant feet from the ocean.

He was looking for attention, and he got just that as he touched down on the lawn in front of the General Assembly building, dropping the submarine none-too-gently on the ground behind him. It was broad daylight and there were plenty of surface-dwellers around to bear witness when he motioned with the Trident, summoning a huge wave that swept across the grass and smashed the tall glass facing. It was a testament to maturity moderating his temper that he used it to collect and hold the shards, rather than letting them become a spray of lethal shrapnel, but there was no mistaking his fury as he strode through the frothing water to the entrance.

There were a number of things Namor disliked about doing business in the surface world. Most prominent among them was the filthiness of their cities, especially the air, but the sheer amount of clothing it required him to wear was also a major irritant. His own people wore very little, generally only a pair of hip-hugging briefs, and the multiple layers of fabric considered de rigeur for their businessmen struck him as absurdly excessive. That was especially true of the tie, which couldn't even be said to serve any remotely practical function.

Still, when in Rome and all that, so the Atlantean hybrid had grudgingly acceded to local social mores, albeit with the finest quality bespoke tailoring to keep his discomfort to a minimum. And at least, he thought as he crossed the spacious foyer on the ground floor of the Tower, Stark kept his fortress clean. The air-breather's people were also competent and pleasant to deal with, welcoming Namor at the reception desk and quickly issuing him a security card to the penthouse elevator.

Stepping aside to let the next visitor, an ordinary-looking man in an ordinary-looking suit, step up, the Atlantean monarch clipped the card to his lapel. After a moment to check that it was hanging correctly and to brush a bit of imaginary dust from his suit coat, Namor strolled over to stand directly in front of the doors. Some unseen sensor there scanned the card and obligingly opened the lift for him, and he stepped aboard, turning to glance out across the lobby. There, the Atlantean was mildly surprised to see the man who'd been behind him scurrying toward the elevator, waving his arm in a signal Namor had some years before finally decoded to mean 'hold the doors!'

While he was possessed of certain traits that could, with charity, be called personality flaws, Namor wasn't a total dick 24/7. And he was, after all, considering advancing on a course that would call for no little diplomacy, so he might as well start limbering up. With an internal sigh, he leaned forward, laying a palm against the inner edge of one of the doors to hold it open.

Namor, Emperor of Atlantis and Lemuria, is far more famous below the waves than above them, but he's not completely unheard-of. Fighting Hydra for a brief period in WWII he acquired the code name 'Sub-Mariner' and even appeared in a few comics of the time, though he was a mysterious and alien figure, never becoming as well-known or popular as Captain America. Seeking to preserve the secret of Atlantis' existence, he returned to his undersea home as soon as the threat to it was ended.

In the modern day, to the extent he's known at all it's as Namor McKenzie, reclusive owner of the multi-national marine research and exploration company Oracle Inc. In this guise, he keeps a fairly low profile and has not <s>yet</s> been identified as a superhuman, still less as the hero from 70 years ago. <s>Though someone obsessed with that time period who got enough pieces might put them together ... </s>

Oracle, which is run by CEO Carrie Alexander in much the same way Pepper Potts runs Stark International, is a multinational corporation specializing in marine research, technology, and exploration. While not on a level with SI or other big megacorps, it's fair-sized, successful, and well-regarded in its field. It also funds lobbyists and legislative efforts supporting marine ecology and environment.

Despite being half-surfacer himself, the sea is Namor's kingdom and he considered it home. He's passionately committed to its defense and willing to go to any lengths to defend it. He'll work via surfacer law to do that when he can, but if the law can't act or won't do so quickly enough for his tastes, he'll use direct physical force to put a stop to whatever is pissing him off. For the most part, though, while he's somewhat prejudiced against his father's people, he's polite and not-violent.

Outwardly, Namor appears to be a ruggedly handsome human male in his 40s, with the exception of his pointed ears. When he expects to be dealing with surfacers he usually lets his black hair grow long enough to hide them, otherwise wearing it short. On occasion he sports a small mustache and beard which, coupled with his sharply arched eyebrows lends him a devilish look. He also has three gill slits on either side of the base of his neck, though they're almost invisible when he's not using them to breathe.

PERSONALITY

While he's not as explosively violent as he was when he was young and under the influence of the seaweed toxin, Namor does have a considerable temper. There are also very few people able to either persuade or force him to not simply break whoever or whatever is pissing him off, so pretty much the only restraint he has is self-restraint. When dealing with humans on the surface, he usually tries to 'play nice,' but his patience is not limitless. He's also plenty arrogant.

Having had more contact with a wider variety of humans than any other Atlantean, Namor is not quite as contemptuous of them as many of the rest of his people are. Still, he regards them en masse as ignorant, heedless, stupid, and destructive, and there are very few individual humans he respects.

Among his people, Namor is isolated by his position, and among the surfacers by his alien-ness. While he has trusted advisors and people who come close to being friends, there isn't anyone he can just relax, have fun, and talk about whatever with.

Namor likes women. He likes them a lot. Still, between the Destine incident and losing Dorma, he's pulled in his horns somewhat. He's drawn to women who are beautiful, self-confident, and in touch with their femininity, but his relationships since his wife died have been of the and-a-good-time-was-had-by-all variety. He would welcome a deeper connection, but so far it hasn’t happened.

Though he's only half-Atlantean by blood, Namor is dedicated to the nation-state and protects her fiercely. He also considers the oceans of the world as his domain and likewise under his protection, and has been known to severely punish surface-dwellers who transgress against them (via polluting, overfishing, underwater mining, etc.). Sometimes the punishment is legal, via Oracle, but he's perfectly willing to get his hands literally bloody.

RESOURCES

EQUIPMENT

Neptune's Trident

Neptune's Trident is an ancient artifact said to have been bestowed upon one of the first rulers of Atlantis by the god Neptune himself. It is forged of adamantine, the metal adamantium is named after, and is razor sharp and virtually unbreakable. In addition to its purely mundane qualities as a weapon, it has powerful mystical capabilities, though these can only be wielded by one of at least partial Atlantean blood who truly believes himself (or herself) to be acting in Atlantis' best interests.

The Trident grants the wielder power over water, allowing him to summon waves and alter currents, as well as create fogs and intense rainstorms. It also allows him to conjure and control water elementals, though doing so is dangerous and very taxing.

The Trident can also project beams of different colors which have a variety of effects, including healing, blasting, stunning, inflicting pain, etc. depending on the wielder's wishes and level of control.

STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES

SKILLS, POWERS, ETC.

Amphibious -- Namor is able to breathe both underwater and in air and is comfortable in either, though he needs periodic contact with water to survive. He can withstand freezing temperatures and the high pressure of the deep oceans and swim at a rate of over 300 knots. He can see unusually well in dark or murky water and has an innate form of echolocation and ability to sense minute vibrations in his surroundings. The latter works best underwater, but can function in a limited fashion in air.

Superhuman Physiology -- While it declines depending how long he's been out of contact with water, even at its lowest Namor has greater strength, speed, reflexes, durability, and stamina than a peak human. At his own peak, he is fantastically superhumanly strong, able to lift thousands of tons with ease and go toe-to-toe with extremely powerful beings. He can move and run faster than even peak human capability and exert himself for over 24 hours before significantly tiring. He can withstand impacts from high caliber bullets, terminal velocity falls, blows from powerful superhumans, and concussive energy blasts without significant injury. His reflexes are fast enough to dodge and catch missiles.

Superhuman Healing & Longevity -- Namor heals quickly, and at an extremely accelerated rate when completely submerged in water. His longevity is unknown, but he is well through the average Atlantean lifespan of 120 years, but appears to be only in his middle age.

Aquatic Telepathy --Namor can communicate telepathically with most forms of marine life and persuade them to do his bidding. He can also communicate telepathically with other Atlanteans.

Flight -- In addition to the abilities granted by his hybrid physiology, Namor is a mutant with the power of flight. At normal speeds he's faster than a military jet and if he pushes himself he can achieve escape velocity (however, as he has no natural means of surviving outside the atmosphere, it's questionable whether he would do so). He has very good control and is extremely agile, able to stop or turn practically on a dime. He can also carry weights of up to 50 tons when he flies.

Combat -- Namor is an expert in both armed and unarmed hand-to-hand combat, and with Atlantean energy weapons. He's less adept with surface missile weapons, most of which are largely useless underwater, but is familiar enough with them to know their capabilities. He's also highly skilled in tactics and strategy and is a capable military leader.

Government -- Namor has ruled a successful, thriving Atlantis for half a century.

WEAKNESSES, DISADVANTAGES, ETC.

Namor's greatest vulnerability is to anything that dehydrates him. Fire and heat are the most common examples, but he'll do okay even in relatively high temperatures as long as the humidity is also high. He won't last as long as even a regular human in a desert, though, and fire will injure him more severely.

Another big weakness is his arrogance. There isn't much he can't chew, but if ever there was a guy to bite off that much (or more), it's him. Unless he's actively trying to be diplomatic (and sometimes even then), he can be extremely abrasive, making enemies and alienating potential allies.

A unique weakness Namor has is a substance that can be extracted from a common form of seaweed and which clouds his thinking and makes him agitated, erratic, hostile, paranoid, and sometimes explosively violent. Colorless, odorless, and tasteless, it can be introduced into the water around him or aerosolized invisibly, so even though he carries an antidote, he might not even be aware he's been dosed.

BIOGRAPHY

PAST

In 1915, Atlantis was rocked by explosions blasting the ice above. Curious and overconfident, young Princess Fen used a potion that allowed her to breathe out of the water and went to investigate. There she found the SS Oracle, but was captured by the ship's crew, which brought her to the captain, Leonard McKenzie. Each was intrigued by the other, and the two quickly fell in love. Their budding romance was shattered, however, by the arrival of Atlantean forces sent to retrieve their missing princess. McKenzie was seemingly killed and Fen taken back to Atlantis, where she discovered she was pregnant.

When her son Namor ("Avenging Son") was born, the only outward sign of his half-human heritage was his skin being the light pink of his father's people rather than the blue of his mother's. This became a problem for some of the more racist and xenophobic Atlanteans, including his cousin, Byrrah. The fact that Namor became second in line for the throne, usurping what Byrrah viewed as his own position, was a further source of resentment.

As Namor grew up, Byrrah hid his hatred while quietly engineering a number of dangerous situations in hopes of getting rid of his rival, but Namor survived them all (ironically thanks to abilities stemming from his hybrid nature). Byrrah eventually abandoned those efforts, but discovered that the sap from a kind of seaweed, though completely innocuous to pureblooded Atlanteans, made Namor irritable and prone to fly into explosive rages. Occasional doses of it was a more subtle form of attack, but gave Namor a reputation for being erratic and emotionally unstable. It also prompted him to spend more time on the surface, where he was calmer and less cranky (which Namor sensed without understanding why).

In 1941, human divers were spotted near Atlantis. As he was the only one who could pass as human Namor went above to investigate, where he discovered a massive war being waged among the surface nations. While inclined to leave them to their squabbles, he also discovered the divers were Nazis/Hydra, which had taken what he considered an unhealthy interest in the 'legends' of Atlantis. In the course of 'discouraging' that interest, he met and fought beside Captain America briefly, acquiring the moniker of the 'Sub-Mariner.' Impressed by the surface hero, Namor parted on good terms with him.

Otherwise largely unimpressed by his father's people, Namor returned to Atlantis, though over the course of the following decade he periodically visited the surface in disguise. This was sometimes to keep an eye on things, sometimes to punish those he felt were trespassing or damaging his domain, and sometimes because he had a taste for surface women (especially blondes …).

It was in 1958 while he was away on one of these trips that Atlantis was wracked by a series of powerful earthquakes which caused the deaths of Emperor Thakorr and Princess Fen. Returning, Namor found that not only had Byrrah seized power but also found proof the quakes had been caused by someone on the surface. Byrrah further used that to turn the Atlanteans against the half-human Namor (who had been so conveniently absent and among the surfacers when they happened). Furious at the accusation (and secretly dosed with the seaweed toxin), Namor attacked Byrrah, but was driven off and forced to return to the surface.

Badly injured, Namor was found by a father-daughter team of marine biologists named Caleb and Carrie Alexander, who nursed him back to health. Initially Namor was still in a rage and ready to wipe out surfacers wholesale for what they'd done to him and his people, but the Alexanders discovered the toxin in his blood and were able to synthesize an antidote. Between that and their kindness, they were able to calm him down and persuade him to limit his vengeance to the people who actually merited it.

Once he was back on his feet and able to think clearly, Namor began to make plans. To punish the people responsible (and clear his name, the first step in booting Byrrah off the throne that was rightfully his), he had to find out who was responsible. And to do that, he needed to learn a lot more about the surface world and develop a much bigger presence in it. Enlisting the Alexanders as his agents and using funding from treasures from shipwrecks, he purchased a multinational and renamed it Oracle, Inc. in memory of his father's ship. Over the next few years, he grew and developed Oracle into a company with fingers in a large number of marine-related pies, constantly searching for who might have known of Atlantis and sought to target it.

In the mid-60s, Namor finally discovered that a madman named Paul Destine had been behind the destruction and that Destine was actually his son, born of one of his earliest affairs with a surface woman. For Namor it had been a casual fling, but for her it had been much more serious. Not all that mentally stable to begin with, she'd gone mad and raised Paul to believe he was the true king of Atlantis. Obsessed with proving it, the young man had managed to find Neptune's Trident, a long-lost Atlantean artifact that had once belonged to the city-state's ancient kings. Not merely symbolic, the Trident possessed a number of powers, and it was in attempting to master them that Destine had caused the earthquakes.

It had also broken his mind, and he went completely insane when Namor confronted him. Though Namor was reluctant to hurt his son, he was left with no choice, and when the fierce battle was over Destine was dead and his father was in possession of the Trident.

Armed with the Trident (and the antidote), Namor returned to Atlantis and overthrew Byrrah, who fled along with the most virulently anti-human Atlanteans to Lemuria, a rival undersea kingdom. Leaving Oracle in the hands of the Alexanders, Namor remained in Atlantis, reconnecting with his people and establishing himself as Emperor.

Believing that for the sake of stability he needed a wife and heir, Namor approached a distant cousin, Lady Dorma. Though at first it was just a marriage of state, he and Dorma grew to love each other fiercely. Sadly, she was murdered by assassins sent at Byrrah's request by the Lemurian Queen Llyra. As a result, war broke out between the two nations and raged for many years, leading eventually to Lemuria's defeat.

After the war, Namor largely remained in Atlantis, though he continued to monitor (and sometimes meddle in) surface affairs through Oracle. Despite the urging of his advisors and his own knowledge that he should, he was unable to bring himself to remarry, though he took occasional lovers among surface women in hopes of finding one both worthy and willing to be his queen.

In 2012, Namor chanced to be visiting one of Oracle's Russian subsidiaries when a report came in from a team sent to explore a section of the coast of Greenland. Intrigued by the information that they'd found a plane with a man inside frozen in the ice, he went to investigate himself and was surprised to discover the man was his old acquaintance Captain America. Thinking he deserved the honor of at least a proper burial, Namor contacted SHIELD, which sent a recovery team. He was very surprised (but not at all displeased) when Cap was successfully revived, and he proceeded to follow the surface hero's activities as much as he was able.

With the Chitauri invasion of New York and Dark Elf assault on Greenwich, Namor began to take even more of an interest in surface affairs, realizing that such attacks posed a threat to the entire world. He was considering actually revealing Atlantis' existence to the world and seeking membership in the UN when the revelation of Hydra's infiltration of SHIELD convinced him to hold off. He continued to monitor the situation closely, however.

Namor had flown quickly since leaving Atlantis earlier that day, but he'd also flown long and the sun was almost below the horizon by the time he reached the tower that was Oracle, Inc.'s global headquarters. As central offices of multinational corporations went, at only a couple of dozen floors it was rather small, but it was distinctive for all that. The structure was a fusion of Atlantean and surface technology and architecture, four gracefully curving columns rising up to unite at the top, where Namor's own combination office-apartment penthouse was located. Crystal clear thermal glass provided every office with sunlight and a view, and vertical gardens abundant greenery to every floor. It was powered by ribbon-like wind turbines rising up through its core, as well as solar, geothermal, and tidal turbines beneath the surface of the river that ran beside it.

It was negative-emissions and almost completely self-sustaining. Getting it built had been a ridiculously difficult and expensive endeavor, but Namor had the finances and was a man who believed in putting his money where his mouth was and leading by example. It was stupid and hypocritical to fly around in a private jet to harangue people about driving SUVs, and if you wanted to persuade others to live in 500 square foot crates, you shouldn't buy huge mansions for yourself. So he'd spent and bribed and arm-twisted and in one memorable case outright threatened, but in the end the result had been well worth it.

Sensing his arrival, part of the roof descended soundlessly, reshaping itself into a spiral stair down into the apartment, while the lights inside activated automatically. With a tiny smile of satisfaction, all he would allow himself given the reason for his trip above, the Emperor headed below. He was tired from the flight, but had a great deal of work yet to do before he could sleep. And first on the list …

"Nixie!" Namor called, summoning up Oracle's AI chatelaine. "Get me Tony Stark."
