plot
The world has been thrown into turmoil. Two alien invasions in as many years resulted in thousands of casualties, with both only narrowly beaten back, and dangerous advanced technology falling into unscrupulous hands. Magneto's defeat by the Sentinels drove mutant supremacists to increasingly desperate and savage lengths. Rumors grew of uncanny monsters stalking the shadows and taking the unwary. But, through it all, humanity placed its faith in S.H.I.E.L.D.

And then S.H.I.E.L.D. fell.

It was stupid. He went outside for five minutes, and Alex locked him outside. They got along a lot better than they had six months ago, and Scott was pretty sure that it was borne of a desire to be annoying rather than malicious intent. But it was still annoying as hell. After trying the door twice, just to make sure the lock hadn't stuck due to the cold weather, he gave up on that means of entering the house.

There was a bank of windows right next to it, which was naturally the best thing to do. He swiped snow off the windowsill, brushing his hands off on his pants afterwards and mentally swearing at the cold, and lost no time in starting to get the clasp open. Despite the fact that he had no positive memories of Jack Winters, the man had at least been thorough in teaching him. Funnily enough, he wouldn't be joking if he said he could do this with his eyes closed. It had been after Jack's influence that he'd been able to see.

He got the window open in about thirty seconds, but he was still glad that he'd been wearing boots instead of sneakers. Otherwise he'd be soaking wet from the ankles down, and that would have been no fun. Scott pulled himself up to sit on the windowsill, dropping his feet inside with only a small sound. Honestly, he really had to talk to Charles about getting proper locks around here. It only took another few seconds to pull the window back down and resecure the lock, and when he turned back around... busted.

"Uh, hi," he offered. "I swear I live here." Which wasn't something too believable, considering that he'd just been caught jumping over the sill. But he'd bet that that skin colour wasn't from makeup, which led him to believe that, whatever colour this woman was, she was a mutant as well.

Initially distrustful of anyone he may meet, Scott has put effort into giving an unruffled and competent appearance. Most people are fooled off the bat, though he's had some heartfelt in-depth discussions with Xavier and a couple other of his few trusted friends. Giving without expecting anything in return, he's always ready to give a second chance and is steadfast with his loyalty and respect. He works at hiding his anxiety and low self-esteem, and his childhood-instilled belief that he needs to earn basic human necessities and kindness.

Separated as a child from his one living family member after the supposed death of their parents, raised the unloved captive of Stryker, he escaped only to fall under the power of abusive criminals. His Rescued by Xavier and becoming a part of his team, Scott did his best to be accepted into his new (and only good) home. For reasons beyond his imagination, the Professor accepted him onto the team once he became of age, and entrusted him with more and more responsibility.

Eventually he started leading the team in the headmaster's absence. He tends to come off as too strict and harsh for many of the more free-spirited team members but it's borne out of a desire to keep them safe. Once the battle's over, however, he does his best to be open and friendly with his teammates, though it's superficial only. Very few of those at the school could truly count themselves among his inner circle, though he seems to be friends with nearly all of them.

Future
Needless to say, he needs to pester his brother. And given that the unreliability of his powers is largely due to his mental state, perhaps Charles or Emma or Jean poking at his head to help him with that. Not to mention his canon relationships, friendships, etc. among the team. I'd be highly interested in pursuing his relationship with Jean but that's up to her player. I'm also cool with reviving any old threads that might be around.

Lovers
I am a personal fan of Scott and Jean's relationship but that's not a necessary part of his activity here. Open for any other girls that might be interested. Though fair warning that Alex is probably going to try to steal them.

Enemies
Scott tries not to make many of these but he does have an undying hatred for Stryker. It left permanent damage on him both emotionally and physically, though mostly the former. He blames Stryker for the lingering effects of his trauma as much as he blames himself. There are probably a few other people at XI he's managed to irritate enough that they nearly fall into this category.

Scott hadn't imagined that there would be any trouble forthcoming when Charles Xavier sent him a polite mental request to join him in his office. The two of them weren't the closest, for which Scott casually blamed himself, but they were fairly good friends and Scott was in fact generally the team leader in his absence. Hearing that there was a mission was fairly routine as well, and the mutant nodded along to everything the Professor said.

At least, until he mentioned who would be going along with him. "You're sending me out with just Alex Summers?" he repeated, suddenly wondering if this was a good idea. He had his suspicions about the younger man, still vague and mostly ignored, but there nonetheless. Not to mention that he was pretty sure Alex didn't really like him, though so far the other's attitude toward him had been semi-aloof but almost friendly on some occasions.

Being someone who did not go out of his way to make friends with someone like that, Scott had thus far had few interactions and fewer conversations with Alex, and even less desire to increase their time together. Which was, no doubt, why Charles wanted them to work together on a scouting run. Get a start on building team morale and all that. Scott had only seen Alex's powers once but they'd been impressive, and of any two people on the team, it was him and Scott who would most likely be asked to work together if the decision was made based on similarity of powers.

That didn't mean he had to like it. Charles would have given him the option to back out, he knew, but he didn't ask. How hard can it be, really? I've flown plenty of kids' first missions. Since Alex already knew that Scott took on leadership positions, and what kind of powers he had, he couldn't give his lead too much grief. As of yet Scott was pretty sure Alex hadn't seen him use his abilities yet but there was a first time for everything. He had survived worse than a sulky, snarky twenty-two-year-old.

Charles called Alex to the office to meet with his teammate for the day, and Scott did his best to keep a professional demeanour despite the fact that he was secretly wondering if Xavier was purposefully tormenting him for some reason. Why make him work with Alex Summers, of all people...? Once Alex showed up, he tidied those thoughts up and tucked them away.

"Alex," he greeted him, trying to sound at least a little bit friendly. "The Professor's heard news of a possible area in the Taconic Mountains related to a man named Stryker. He wants us to go check it out. Stryker and his people have a history of harming mutants and they're a little close to the school if the information's legit. We're flying there in the jet, leaving in half an hour, and we'll be back for dinner." Assuming nothing happened but if the jet's sensors indicated a bigger problem than anticipated, Scott was taking them right back home. No risks taken with a potential amateur - he had no idea of Alex's history, how well he controlled himself, or the extent of his powers.

[OOC hope it's cool I handwaved getting them together initially, let me know of any changes needed]

PERSONALITY

Scott commonly has an initial reaction of hesitance or distrust, but is very good at hiding it and coming off as friendly. He's described himself as an introvert, but that's not wholly true. It's more that he isn't comfortable enough around people to be himself until he gets to know them, and doesn't go out of his way to befriend people. If they're rude or antagonistic toward him, he'll turn right around and walk off unless he needs to be nice or has already promised to get along with them.

When leading the X-Men, he might come off a little too harsh for some. He's very strict and no-nonsense, all too aware of how easily a slip up can cause injury or even death. It's often earned him dislike from the more rebellious and/or independent members. Once the job is done, however, he's friendly with his teammates and open on a superficial level. Very few of them know the significant parts or wounds in his life but plenty of them would say they know him. He's worked to cultivate that feeling among them, wanting to belong even though he has a hard time being truly open.

Still, if someone earns his loyalty and respect, they keep it unless they do something seriously wrong. He rarely turns his back on people and will always give someone a chance to explain themselves, even if he's firm in his beliefs regarding them. It might not do anything to change his mind but he at least considers himself fair.

Despite how much he gives to his team, he doesn't always expect to get anything in return. He was raised by Sinister and Stryker to sacrifice without receiving, which also led to low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in personal and social situations. Xavier has helped him greatly with that but he still criticises himself too harshly most of the time. Occasionally he is harsh with others as well, but it's rare, and a product of him being either too frustrated or worried to keep a mental filter.

He also has anxiety issues, mostly a fear that he'll either screw up social situations or that he'll somehow lose his place on his team due to his own inabilities. His childhood post-crash instilled a deep belief that he had to earn even basic human necessities, and that they could be withheld for any shortcoming. While he doesn't consciously have that fear with Xavier or his team, it rarely leaves him. However he is consistently afraid that his mental issues and lack of control over his powers will end in his banishment from the school due to the danger he poses to the kids.

Psionic field - enveloping his body, it is resonant with his ruby quartz eyewear and allows for him to close his eyes without injury and for his eyelids to be capable of stopping the beams

Spatial awareness - unusually able to calculate trigonometry and keep tabs on his surroundings, he is particularly skilled at banking shots with his powers

Telepathic resistance - having been around telepaths for so long, he's built up a slight resistance to their powers, though not quite enough to make a difference in battle

Genetic flaw - while immune to Havok's abilities, he is not immune to his brother Gabriel

Loyalty - despite strained relationships, Scott would consistently place himself in harm's way for his family and friends, especially his teammates

Power regulation - due to both psychological and physical trauma, he cannot control his powers, though it was primarily the trauma of losing his family responsible for this

Psychological trauma - the plane crash and following hardships left deep and permanent scars on his psyche, including nightmares and related anxiety issues of varying but strong intensities

Recharge - after using his powers, he needs time to be able to build back up to using them

Reliance on equipment - having become so accustomed to wearing the ruby quartz visor or glasses, Scott's powers are less controllable without some their aid, which is also greatly psychological

BIOGRAPHY

PAST

The oldest son of a USAF pilot, Scott and his younger brother were born and raised in Alaska. They were flying when something happened causing the plane to catch fire. The boys were shoved off the plane with the only available parachute, their parents willing to sacrifice themselves if it gave their kids a chance at survival.

Scott suffered brain injury upon landing, which is responsible for the physical part of him being unable to control his powers. Hospitalised once they were found, they both suffered traumatic amnesia, which affected Scott badly enough that he briefly completely forgot about his parents' existence. Eventually he remembered all but a few details regarding the accident itself. Later traumatic events shoved many of those memories aside but Xavier later helped him recover those he'd formerly blocked away.

Found by geneticist Mr Sinister, the boys were separated by him as he wanted Scott (whom he believed the stronger of the two) to become vulnerable. Alex was adopted and Scott lost all contact with him, being handed over to Stryker to be contained between the times at which Sinister was interested in experimenting on him. To an outsider, it would seem like nobody was interested in adopting him, but in truth he was prevented from being placed with a family multiple times by Stryker. He was told by the man himself that he'd murdered Alex in cold blood. Living a seemingly ordinary life except for common and lengthy 'doctor appointments', he was both physically and emotionally scarred but managed to hide it from everyone else at the orphanage.

Scott's powers truly manifested when he was a teenager. Plagued by headaches, Scott was unaware of what was due to happen but his powers soon explosively revealed themselves. He accidentally nearly killed a crowd of people, saving them by again using his powers and miraculously being able to do as intended without causing further damage. However, the people believed he'd tried to kill them and attempted to return the favour, prompting in him fleeing. The positive side of this was that he also managed to escape from Stryker.

Attracting the attention of the X-Men with that display, he was found by Professor Xavier and offered the school as a safe haven. He was wary of accepting at first, well aware of how Xavier could turn out to be like Sinister or Stryker had, but quickly realised how wrong and abnormal his former treatment had been and placed full trust in the Professor. Rescued from the abusive criminals he'd fallen in with by an FBI-Xavier team up, he accepted a position on the team.

Despite lacking social skills at the time, he fell in love with teammate Jean Grey, but didn't tell her of his feelings due to simply not knowing how or whether he should. He also wasn't sure if his feelings were legitimate as he had never experienced them before. That, plus his fear of being rejected and losing the friendship he'd built with her as a teammate, ensured his silence. When others expressed romantic interest in Jean, Scott considered himself unworthy in comparison and remained doubly silent.

Since first falling in with Professor Xavier, Scott has shown a desire for lifelong commitment to the school. At first he was highly sceptical of the professor's conviction in peace being possible but the other man showed him how his negative experiences had not been the norm and that there were far better options. Convinced that Xavier's was the safest place for him, and that it could be inestimably beneficent to other kids, Scott agreed to take a teaching position upon coming of age, as well as becoming a member of the team.

Originally he'd been uncertain of humans since his only revelation of his powers around them had been the experience leading to him nearly being killed. But Xavier's passion and belief led to him changing his mind and becoming a firm believer in the professor's ideals. He still occasionally has doubts, but overall his outlook is a positive one. He knows that his life would have taken a very different turn had Xavier not found him, and while he is aware of and acknowledges the bad things both humans and mutants have done, he says that under different circumstances, anyone at Xavier could be in their place, and they deserve compassion and mercy.

Until a year ago, he had no way of knowing anything that had happened to his brother. But then Alex showed up at Xavier's, and Scott grew faintly suspicious at the fact that someone with the same last name and age bracket as his brother had showed up with a similar mutation. At first he was in self-denial that he might have finally found his brother, but when their histories were too similar to ignore, he finally acknowledged that they were siblings. He'd initially been wary, lingering trust issues from his younger years, and while he fears that that might have caused some strife between them, he genuinely desires to be a good brother to the younger man. He doesn't fully understand Alex's antagonistic attitude towards him but is willing to put in effort to change his brother's view of him.

The Xavier Institute, and the help of its headmaster, was the best thing that had happened to Scott. He was well aware of how quickly he could lose it, and he'd worked to become an essential part of the place despite the fact that he knew the professor would never throw him out. Or even ask him to take a break or something without good reason. Yeah, he knew that everyone seemed to think he didn't have any problems, apart from an asshole little brother (and Scott probably got inordinately irritated over that, especially since he'd known his brother for all of eight or nine months).

But nights like these made it hard for him to believe that things were always going to be okay. He'd had another nightmare, typically panicked by the time he awoke and barely able to breathe. And of course he'd felt the softly soothing presence of the Professor in his head for a second. Even though he'd freely given the telepath permission to do whatever was needed when he had nightmares, fearful of accidentally injuring someone even though that hadn't yet happened, he always felt guilty that his mental anguish had been enough to wake him out of sleep.

Sending the Prof a brief mental note that he was fine, he was pretty sure the resulting closure of the mental link was due to Xavier falling back asleep. Which made sense as it was dark outside... almost three in the morning. Dammit, not again. He'd been waking up between 2:30 and 3:00 am every night for the past week, though sometimes it had just been generalised anxiety rather than nightmares. It was no easier to deal with that, to have his mind cycle through fears and worries until he could feel his heart pounding out of his chest as he gasped for breath. But he could shut it all down before jabbing the Professor awake, at least.

Knowing from the fluttering in his chest and the tightness in his throat that tonight was not a night to go back to sleep, he shoved the blankets back and got out of bed. There were nightlights on in the hallway as always, but it seemed like nobody else was awake yet. No witnesses to his inability to be the cheerful, normal guy everyone saw. Grabbing his phone, he used the device's flashlight to get down to the front door without turning any overhead lights on. Barefoot as he was, he stayed off the paths, walking onto the dew-dampened grass instead as he crossed the lawn to wander aimlessly around the grounds. Once his heartbeat and breathing rate settled, he'd start thinking of something else to do, or he might just stay out here to await the morning. Either way he wasn't going to close his eyes again.
