plot
The world has been thrown into turmoil. Two alien invasions in as many years resulted in thousands of casualties, with both only narrowly beaten back, and dangerous advanced technology falling into unscrupulous hands. Magneto's defeat by the Sentinels drove mutant supremacists to increasingly desperate and savage lengths. Rumors grew of uncanny monsters stalking the shadows and taking the unwary. But, through it all, humanity placed its faith in S.H.I.E.L.D.

And then S.H.I.E.L.D. fell.

So I'm planning on colouring my hair. I've got a pixie cut (kinda like this), and we're doing all of it instead of highlights or tips. Right now we have five colours to play with: cerise, apple green, violet, turquoise, and midnight blue (La Riche Directions dye). At the moment I've found four different colour mixtures I like... and I like all of 'em. Help me choose?

Blue, pink, purple, and turquoise

Bucky had fond memories of his first meeting with Gambit. He hadn't really mentioned that to Gyrich, simply giving a clinical review of his conversation of the mutant and sort of leaving out the part where they bonded over kicking ass in a bar fight. They'd told the bartender to bill the Avengers anyway. It had told Steve that he was alive in the area, but hopefully the other supersoldier had picked up on that already.

Still, he hadn't been shy about asking for leave to go check out the suits. He'd said that he'd witnessed them attacking Gambit, which wasn't entirely false, but not entirely true either. Gyrich hadn't seemed a hundred percent against someone out and about that didn't like mutants, but let him do what he wanted. For which Bucky was glad, as he did hold a fairly positive opinion of Gambit and disliked the idea of him getting tracked down and hurt by someone.

A couple days of digging led to an eventual lead, and Bucky grabbed his work bag from under the bed. Tactical outfit, comm unit, travel-sized listening equipment, and a nice little collection of weaponry. Nothing that would be mistaken as anything benign but also nothing that would stick out. He'd been denied anything stronger than a rifle without filling out forms, which was just annoying. Didn't everyone need a rocket launched stored under their bed?

It was a solid lead that he had, though, so Bucky let Gyrich know where he was going and went off to the big city. The place was far stranger than the last time he'd seen it but he still considered it home in a way. Once you lived there, it claimed you in a way, no matter where you'd lived before. Since only two seconds of surveillance was needed to see that he'd hit gold, if only for recording, he changed into his tac suit, chose a sufficient amount of weaponry while going through comm checks, and grabbed his rifle and the case with the listening equipment before taking a hike in order to look for a good place to stake out the joint.

Bucky usually didn't bother with getting day passes off the base, he just sorta texted Gyrich after he'd left. He only got away with it half the time. Still, the motivation of being a brat was more than enough for him. Life wasn't the best, but it could be far worse. Today looked like it'd turn to a storm later on, but for now it was just past noon and comfortably overcast.

He decided to go out to New York rather than the original country road trip like he'd planned. The traffic into the city was horrible as ever, but Bucky tended to be of the opinion that things could always be worse. Could be Hydra, aliens, Nazi aliens, all kinds of things. And it wasn't like there was ever any shortage of things to do in New York. Eventually he planned to check out what the nightlife looked like these days, but for now, he was going to be home for dinner. Pizza had been hinted at.

Given that he was still a Brooklyn boy at heart, he chose an abandoned building to climb the fire escape of, sitting down with his legs hanging over the edge. Since it had evidently been wrecked in the Chitauri attack and never repaired, he probably should have steered clear, but why submit to common sense? This was the best place to people watch from, anyway. Nobody paid attention to this place and they'd probably just figure he was a hobo. Bucky sat there for a good hour before deciding to return to street level and check out places of interest nearby.

Signs for Central Park caught his eye, and he miraculously avoided an accident as he cut across a few lanes of traffic to check it out. Nobody seemed to care beyond the obligatory yelling, mostly from cabbies who didn't seem to be nearly as insulted as they sounded. Bucky waved vaguely at the lot of them before continuing his walk down the street. The place was huge, and very well taken care of considering he could remember Robert Moses' work on it in 1934. For someone greatly attracted to wide open spaces, it was perfect, and had the added bonus of being at home.

Evidently this place had a castle. And a turtle pond. Bucky kinda wanted to see those. He chose a random footpath and wandered along it for a distance before leaving it for the Great Lawn. It was a lot of greenery for the middle of New York. With nowhere to go and nowhere to be, he was fine taking his time and looking around. Despite the breeze that had kicked up and the fact that it was a Tuesday, there were plenty of people around, including some families. Mostly little kids, but he could recognise a teen playing hooky when he saw one. After all, he'd done so countless times himself.

Bucky had the option to run plenty of missions for SWORD, and he probably could have done a very nice job at freelance work. Instead he sort of liked to 'sneak out' at night (he was under no delusions as to his ability to escape the base unseen unless he put serious effort into it) and do some fun vigilante stuff under the table.

Of course, his definition of fun was probably not the definition of anyone else's. He did find it funny to break into the local police stations and leave guys in the back to be found by the officer on duty. There had been a lot of shouting sometimes but depending on the place he could pass it off as Daredevil doing it. Probably other vigilantes around but he didn't make a habit of finding out who was around and who wasn't. None of them were of his caliber, he'd bet.

Gyrich encouraged him to take day trips, so occasionally Bucky did, changing into his work clothes after he'd left. Just because he wasn't waving his old Soldier outfit in his CO's face didn't mean he had to hide it too much. Plus, he'd always been a bit of a sneak. After all, he was a teen during the end years of Prohibition. And a teenager in general.

Waltzing around alleys and back streets dressed up like the Soldier probably wasn't the best idea he'd ever had in his life. But he'd had a million and one other bad ideas, even before the whole Hydra thing. That had just given him a whole new spectrum to judge things on. And if he could use his reputation to to scare off some two-bit wanna-be criminals from honest people, well, maybe it was good for something. He was pretty sure a couple people had tried to report Winter Soldier sightings to the cops but he was also sure that nobody really believed them. Ghost stories were meant to be scary, not plausible.

Bucky was grateful to Gyrich for everything that had been done for him. He was, really. Sometimes, though, he really had to wonder about the way it had all started. Turning into the Soldier was something he was against on principal, due to everything he'd been used for and everything that had happened to him. Even though going back into that had been the start of the road to healing...

He wasn't unhappy with where he was. Doing the occasional mission for SWORD, catching up with Steve, making friends, all of it was great. Still, if you started things in a bad way, they weren't too likely to turn out fantastic, were they? Just because things were okay now didn't mean they would stay that way. Gyrich had earned the trust and loyalty Bucky placed in him, and he had several other people to turn to should things end badly.

There was still a feeling in the back of his mind that he shouldn't be okay with it. He hadn't mentioned it to anyone, though he thought Gyrich might have noticed that he felt a little strange. But he'd remembered what Remy had said about a guy named Charles Xavier and decided to at least give him half a chance. Everything he'd heard about him pointed him out as a first class person, always trying to help people, strong moral code, etc. etc. Finding the place hadn't been too hard, even if nothing directly pointed at it being a mutant school. Or maybe he just didn't know what to look for.

Whatever happened, the place certainly looked nice. Far bigger than he'd been expecting, even though it was a sort of boarding school place. And it looked like it was really busy from the amount of people hanging around. Bucky couldn't complain about that, considering that he'd heard the place was the safest one for kids with weird abilities. Like, evidently, wings. Oookay. For a second he couldn't help staring, but then he told himself to focus and actually approach the house instead of just staring at it from the road.

It hadn't been hard to borrow a car from Gyrich, simply saying that he wanted to take a day off and see some sights. Which wasn't exactly the most truthful of things, but not wholly inaccurate either. He was hardly going to go check out Coney Island. Mutant school, instead. Not that he was planning on enrolling or anything. He parked in the driveway, figuring that someone could ask him to move the car if it was in the way or something. Um... what now?
