plot
The world has been thrown into turmoil. Two alien invasions in as many years resulted in thousands of casualties, with both only narrowly beaten back, and dangerous advanced technology falling into unscrupulous hands. Magneto's defeat by the Sentinels drove mutant supremacists to increasingly desperate and savage lengths. Rumors grew of uncanny monsters stalking the shadows and taking the unwary. But, through it all, humanity placed its faith in S.H.I.E.L.D.

And then S.H.I.E.L.D. fell.

The why and how was the business of somebody else. Piotr was not a leader, he wasn't a tactician, nor was he a subtle combatant. Piotr was a blunt instrument when it came to physical pursuits such as battle. The best way to deploy him was either on free fire offense or choke point defense. Fortunately, those of greater tactical wisdom amongst the X-Men were well aware of this fact.

Thus it was that Piotr, the X-Men known as Colossus, appeared in a disc of light on the island side of the Brooklyn Bridge in his standard tactical gear. Sleeveless, as it was, meant that the unnatural chill bit even into skin acclimated to harsh Siberian winters, necessitating the change into his metallic form. Obviously tougher, apparently stronger, and beneficially immune to all but the coldest of colds. He wasn't nearly as spry as many of his peers, but then he didn't have to be while defending the relatively finite width of a bridge. Even one as broad as the famous Brooklyn Bridge.

The wind howled, the snow drove, and Colossus stood impassively in the middle of the bridge for a long moment waiting to see if anything would choose the moment to jump out at him. When nothing did, he made a choice and began striding slowly toward the mainland side in search of the opponents he hoped had elected to give up and go home. Piotr was no optimist, he had his full measure of Russian fatalism, but he liked to hope for mildness even while setting his stores for the harshest of seasons. The wind died down a bit as he moved forward and he paused, turning just his head to cock his ear into the distance behind him. Had he heard something? Perhaps one of the abandoned vehicles stuck in the snow on the bridge still had its radio on... his hulking figure waited another moment, his face impassive, before moving forward again.

Driving in New York was never a particularly alluring prospect. Add in winter weather? Nope. Some even weirder winter weather? More nope. The only thing that could make this worse was if alien giants decided to screw up the city. Oh, wait. They had. Which was the main reason that the Avengers had been losing sleep lately. It seemed like aliens just liked this weird city for some reason. A lot of the time Sam didn't see why, honestly. Crazy people in a crazy place.

Tony had tweaked some things with his EXO-7 pack for the recent weather, and he was out test-flying them. So far they had turned out brilliantly. He'd flown some test loops around Manhattan before following the street layout on his way to the Brooklyn Bridge. There had been news of some disturbances in the borough on the other side, and even though local law enforcement had handled it completely, it never hurt to have an Avenger on the scene.

He couldn't see much on the street level, through the blizzard. But there hadn't been any alarms going off on any of the police scanners, which would probably have been a precursor to anything happening. The bridge looked eerie, half-shrouded in snow as it was. And deserted, fortunately. Except... what was that, exactly?

Sam pulled back a little and made a running landing on the bridge. The wings folded back up into the pack but he kept the goggles on since it wasn't exactly mild out. He moved around a few of the cars, checking to make sure they were empty as he went. Whatever he might have seen, it was still ahead of him, so he proceeded with caution. "Guys, there might be something on the Brooklyn Bridge, I'm checking it out," he said into the comms. Someone answered asking if he needed backup and he replied in the negative. "It's probably nothing, we'll see."

Colossus stopped just shy of the center point of the bridge. If there were any civilians out there they were wisely staying hidden. Piotr could do little for them except direct them back toward the relative safety of the island, he had to hold the bridge out far enough that it would be a viable position to prevent the enemy from easily going around him or falling back just by leaping to the partially frozen waters below. Whatever the creatures were, he'd been assured the cold wouldn't stop them but the treacherous nature of the icy waters might. It was better than nothing, or so one of his comrades had intoned.

What Piotr hadn't expected was to get a heads up from the Professor that there was an active, determined mind approaching him. Piotr turned his focus on that vector and waited, until a man sized figure wearing some sort of harness appeared through the blowing snow. Piotr was waiting for giants, so all he could do was address the figure and let it decide what it wanted to do. "If you are looking for safety," he called out in the metallic tinged voice that always came with his metal form. "It is best you search on island. If you look for trouble, you have found."

A warning. That was interesting. In general or just for him? Sam wasn't sure but he figured he was about to find out. It seemed like the other figure had expected to see him coming. Whether he was some sort of metahuman or cyborg or what-have-you, Sam's opinion of him was going to depend on what he was doing out here. Being out in this weather was dangerous, though he suspected that the metal skin kept the other man (if man he was) from feeling how cold it was.

"Depends on what kind of trouble you've got," he replied back. Even though he had to shout over the wind, he had on intentions of coming off as threatening. Personally he was very curious as to who this was and why they were here, but curiosity could wait until he knew a bit more. Most of the criminal activity had slowed down or even stopped thanks to the weather, so he doubted the man was here to deal drugs or something. Likely alien-related problems, which was just annoying as hell.

"For what it's worth, I'm one of those guys trying to keep the island safe." Either that would put them on neutral terms or prove that this guy was no good. Sam was fine with both scenarios, since he was confident that could handle them equally. Just with different procedures.

"Trouble I am having? I am having the snow monster trouble, just like people on next bridge south. Colossus prevent flanking maneuver." He stared out into the snow storm, waiting for that kind of trouble to come rumbling up the road just because he'd spoken of it out loud. It didn't, not yet. "Trouble for you is depending on if you want to share trouble with Colossus, or have trouble with Colossus. I am recommending sharing, or retreating." Piotr didn't want to fight anyone, let alone somebody who'd at least started off willing to talk. Maybe they could play chess in the park, after the unnatural winter was resolved.

At the claim that the other man was trying to keep the city safe Piotr looked the man over, in that implacable made of metal sort of way. A heavy metallic eyebrow ridge raised when all he found was a relatively small man in a funny looking harness. He ran through the list of heroes, mutants, and other unusual people he was aware of and this guy didn't even spark a vague connection. Didn't mean the guy wasn't capable, though. Ellie didn't look like she'd be anything but mean to somebody and she could level a building. Probably drop a good section of the bridge into the river, too. "How?" Might as well ask.

Sam waited for a speak-of-the-devil moment, but the ice giants kindly refrained from obliging. He knew they would only be lucky for so long, and they would be in trouble after the grace period. But whoever had sent this Colossus out to hold a bridge by himself either knew something that Sam didn't or had overestimated his abilities, though he saw the tactical reason behind it.

>> "Trouble for you is depending on if you want to share trouble with Colossus, or have trouble with Colossus. I am recommending sharing, or retreating."

"I'd recommend sharing, too. There's more than enough to go around without starting anything, now, isn't there?" And he had no intentions of retreating until they knew that there was no risk of the giants overrunning the bridge. The last thing that anyone needed was for the attackers to get into the city. Far too many civilians.

>> "How?"

"The EXO pack lets me fly on course even in this weather, and I've got a drone that's a lot harder to see or shoot down. My name is Sam Wilson, I'm Falcon of the Avengers. I've mostly been helping in the Bronx, but I got assigned to do a flyover of the bridges." It would have been easier to send one of Stark's automated suits, or one of the Iron Legion, but Sam had preferred to have human intuition as well as cameras on their side. And of course, when asked, he'd offered to go himself.

Piotr, again, glanced back at the smaller figure when the other man was asserting there were enough opponents to go around. Either he knew something about the enemy Piotr didn't or he was vastly underestimating the metal figure on the bridge. Either way, no point in making some sort of ego contest out of it. Who knew what the other guy was capable of? Logan didn't look all that intimidating until he started cracking skulls, Scott had to take off his glasses before his presence on the team was even defensible. So, maybe this Sam character could project energy, lift cars, blow things up with his mind, or what have you.

Nope, he had a flying backpack.

"EXO pack is... heavily armed?" Piotr asked, his tone clearly stating he had yet to find the value in flying on course in this situation. If the guy was pals with Ironman then surely there was some fancy equipment on said device. Surely.

"The EXO's built for maneuverability and speed. Any weapons are carried by the pilot to avoid accidental fire if the pack overheats. But Stark sent me out with some tech he hasn't put on the market, some of it tweaked for ice giants." He wasn't exactly supposed to be telling anyone that, but Sam generally found that a little show-and-tell was necessary to make someone trust you enough to turn their back on you and face an enemy.

And he couldn't blame the guy for not thinking much of him. Which was kind of the point of the EXO program, to make the enemy underestimate you, but it wasn't always the most helpful thing in the field. "If you don't want me around, I'll go back to pararescue in the Bronx, but it's usually good to have someone at your back. Especially when it comes to aliens." Sam would guess he wasn't unwelcome, per se, just that the other man didn't want to be responsible for a civilian, or equivalent.

Piotr grunted in a distinctly unimpressed tone at the name "Stark", but gave no other criticism to the explanation of the device the smaller man had strapped to his back. If it had any of the capabilities of the Iron Man suit, then it was surely an item to be reckoned with. With one exception. There didn't appear to be as much of it as the Iron Man, leaving the wearer woefully exposed compared to Colossus.

As much as he wanted to send the man on his way, for his own safety, he also knew the heroic spirit when he encountered it. The suggestion that he would just leave was exaggeration, a psychological power play from someone who'd apparently learned heroing amidst the massive egos that occupied the upper echelons of the Avengers. "How much will I have to..." The glint of something in the distance caught Piotr's eye, which followed an arching path through the wind and snow. Piotr thrust out his hand and caught the engine block sized ball of ice before it could hit the bridge. It wouldn't have impacted either of them, but the bounce could have gone anywhere and that was assuming it wouldn't have simply shattered into a million shards of icy shrapnel.

"Our guests have arrived," he intoned regretfully. "Do not die, I would not enjoy speaking to your family about that." Colossus said, indirectly but clearly promising to do exactly that should such an undesirable fate befall the Avenger. With that he took a discuss turn and slung the iceball back the way it'd come, only with more force and on a flatter trajectory.

Evidently Stark was not a house favourite. Well, Sam couldn't fault the other man for his opinions. Tony Stark was very few peoples' cup of tea. Not his own, by a long shot, but he could at the least respect the man's ingenuity when it came to tech. And admire anyone that could stand to be in the same room with him for more than half an hour, maybe question their sanity while he was at it. He raised an eyebrow at the unfinished question, wondering just what it would have been, before looking in the direction the ball of ice had come from. Seems as though their company had shown up.

"They wouldn't enjoy it either," Sam assured him, slightly curious at the implied promise but not about to stop for a chat. His older sister would raise Cain if he got himself hurt out here, much less killed. Although he would hardly be around if the latter happened.

But fortunately, and regardless of this Colossus' opinion, his teammates were interested in keeping him alive. Sam had a pretty good idea of where the giants were likely to show up, and Tony had promised that this new tech would work extremely well. From the little bit of test flying he'd done, Sam rather believed him, not that he'd ever had much cause for doubt before.

An outraged roar, loosed from more than a dozen throats, followed the sound of a shattering impact after the return shot disappeared into the snowy distance. Colossus tilted his head slightly, maybe curiously even, but remained otherwise entirely impassive to the response his counter attack had gotten. In the words of a wise man: sew the wind, reap the whirlwind. Pounding feet, like chunks of icy rock, crackled against the ashphalt of the bridge's driving surface. Foreshadowing the slow resolution of large figures easily the size of their metallic opponent breaking from the foggy cover of driven snow via a full out charge.

Colossus responded by ducking down and checking the seats of a car next to him. Upon finding it unoccupied he promptly shoved his hand through the hood to grab it by the drive train, glanced back to ensure his companion was clear, and slung the vehicle down the bridge by turning in a sudden circle and releasing. It spun in the snow for a moment before the tires caught, sending it into a tumble that mowed down several opponents before the rest dove out of the way in reaction. He casually ripped the door of another vehicle and started to advance on the leading edge of the assaulting force with it held in his left hand like a medeival shield.
